KeePass: Download, set up language and database

Download

  1. Download and install the KeePass software from the Original Website

Language package (optional)

Now you need to download the translation of the language you prefer. This can be done in the translations section of the original website.

  1. Search for your preferred language in the list and download the file for the KeePass version you have just downloaded.
  2. The .zip file must now be extracted.
  3. Now open the installed KeePass software
  4. Click View and Change Language in the menu and then the Open Folder button.
    Note: If the „Open Folder“ button is not available, copy the language file directly into the KeePass installation directory.
  5. KeePass now opens the „Language“ folder.
  6. Copy the unzipped language file into this Language folder.
  7. Go back to the KeePass application, then to View and Change Language
  8. Now select your preferred language and confirm with OK.
  9. Close KeePass and start it again. The menu is now in your preferred language.


Create KeePass password database

  1. Open KeePass
  2. Go to File->New
  3. Read the instructions and confirm with OK.
  4. Select a storage location and give the database a name. Click on Save.
  5. In the next dialog box, select a master password with which you can open the database in the future.
  6. Enter it twice.
  7. In expert mode, you can make further settings, such as creating an additional key file. This means that the database can only be opened in combination with the key file and the main password. The Estimated quality line shows you the security quality of your password. The greener, the better is the motto.
  8. Confirm with OK.
  9. You can give the database a description under General, select the encryption algorithm under Security, specify whether the database should be compressed in the Compression tab. In the Recycle Bin tab, you can specify whether the database should have a recycle bin and in the Advanced tab, for example, how long the change history of an entry should be saved. Once you have made all the desired settings, confirm with OK.
  10. You now have the option of printing an emergency sheet. You can also skip this.
  11. Your database will now open and you will see various folders on the left, which KeePass calls groups. You can edit these and or add entries in the right-hand field. Do not forget to save the database file after your have made changes.
  12. Now you can manage all your passwords in one place.

    It is advisable not to store the main password in insecure places. The safest place is your own brain.
